How to Put Together an Outfit – Plus Size Completer Pieces

Hello all, as promised, I have another photo shoot for you this week. For this session, I took my next clothing items in my closet order, wore them as a plain outfit, then enhanced them with a completer piece, mostly cardigans, kimonos, and throws. I thought this would go a long way in showing you how to put together an outfit.

If you have been reading my articles, you will know that a completer piece is just that, a piece that “completes” an outfit. This can be a blazer, cardigan, sweater, vest, jacket, or throw. It can also be a scarf or jewelry. And don’t forget, it can be a cammy or a shirt extender as well. It can even be another shirt or a shirt dress worn over the top. It’s really anything in your closet that can complement what you’re wearing and make the outfit unique and interesting.

My Little Black Dress (LBD), Striped Cover-Up

Once again, my little black dress has come up as next in my closet to wear. LBD made its debut in the Little Blue Dress shoot. Here you see me wearing it by itself. I try to get wardrobe pieces that have their own embellishments, so they can be worn plain and on their own, You can see that this dress has a caged neck line, and it’s both front and back. And the texture is that crinkle material that is fluttery and flowy. So it has texture, pattern, and interest even without the completer piece.

But when I pair it with the striped cover-up, it becomes a whole new outfit.  The cover-up made its debut in the January 3 photo shoot.  The black border on the cover-up complements the black dress, and the bright colors give the outfit a fun vibe. I have worn this outfit to work in the summer, and this could be worn to many a summer function, such as a block party or BBQ, or wear it site-seeing or shopping. There’s no limit to where you can be seen in this outfit.

Black T-Shirt Tunic, Black Jeans, Orange Cardigan

The shirt and the jeans are so plain, that I would hesitate wearing them out in public. Maybe for a quick trip to the post office or the store, but certainly not to any function where I would be meeting people. It’s just not interesting enough. But adding the antique strawberry (really it’s orange!) cardigan gives me some color, and the little bead buttons of the cardigan give the outfit a little interest.  The shirt first appeared in my Holiday Outfits post, and the orange cardigan was featured in way back in my review of the Roamans blouse, and showed up a lot in the January 17 shoot.  I would wear this outfit to work and the various errands I would run through the day. It’s an easy throw-on outfit for a grandma on the go.

Plum Lace Inset Dress, Black Jeans, Black Hoodie Vest

Seeing the pick now, I should have tied the dress up in a knot and made it tunic length like I do in another dress in this shoot. You could argue that there’s a little character in the lace shoulder insets, but it could still use a little something.  I wore this dress in the December 6 session.  I chose to put on the black hoody vest, which I featured in my January 3 post.  This gives the dress a new line, plus makes it more sporty and active. This is another work outfit, and another something to run around in.

Purple Lace Cammy, Black Pencil Skirt, Royal Blue Wrap Kimono

Once again the purple lace cammy has come up for an outfit.  Purple lace cammy shows up in the January 3 post.  I found that it looks really cute with the pencil skirt (and this is another chance to show off my pencil skirt, since it’s brand new, and I wore it in last week’s photo session!). This would make a cute summer strolling outfit if I paired it with a big hat. Also, perhaps something to wear for happy hour and drinks with friends. Not work though. This outfit can stand on its own, but I think it looks great, too, with the Royal Blue Wrap Kimono from the January 24 shoot. It has lace shoulder insets, and is a silky see-through material, so you can see the spaghetti straps and lace of the cammy through it, but everything is covered up. Still, not a good work outfit, but it can be more of an evening ensemble for dinner and drinks.

Beet Lattice Shoulder Tunic, Black Pencil Skirt, Black/White Glen Plaid Shirt Dress

Why do I always feel I have to explain the beet color? Because it’s not purple and it’s not pink. It’s beet, which I explain in my December 6 post. And I think this outfit stands on its own. It’s a cute summer work outfit, with enough color and character to make an entrance where ever I go. But since we are embellishing with completer pieces, I decided to go with the black and white glen plaid shirt dress, worn over the top. My daughters liked this one. It’s great for work. You will note that I wore basically the same outfit last week in my All Black Outfits shoot. You see, I can likely make an outfit out of any color blouse under that shirt dress. Red would look great. Time to buy a red shirt!

Aqua Shark Bite Hem Tunic, Black Jeans, Pink & Mint Paisely Lace Kimono

Another outfit that stands on its own because of the cut of the tunic. from the January 10 post. ( I think I want to go out and buy this tunic in every color, because I love the cut and fit!) However, still a little plain for me. I paired it up with my lace inset mint and pink paisley kimono, and it adds all kinds of interest and character to the outfit. The kimono doesn’t really have any aqua in it, but because it’s a few shades off from the mint green, it still looks good. Remember, it doesn’t have to MATCH, it has to GO, according to TLC’s What Not To Wear. This would be a casual look for work, or would be great for shopping and lunch. I love the flowy aspect of the kimono together with the fit of the tunic, which you saw for the first time in my closet system post.

“No Bad Days” Dress, Black Jeans, Coral Throw

I knotted up this dress from the January 10 post, so it would be a tunic length T-shirt, and paired it with my black jeans. I think it’s cute on its own, and would be great for a busy grandma day with the kids. But of course, we can soup it up with that coral throw, from the Little Blue Dress post. This was an experimental look, one I’ve never tried before, and I think it’s a hit. The orangy-pink coral is just pink enough that it compliments the pastel of the dress. Who knew? There really are no bad days in that dress! This would make a good casual work day outfit.

Baby Doll Teal T-Shirt, Black Pencil Skirt, Light Teal Duster

Oh baby doll, why are you so short? But hey, it looks cute with a skirt, so I guess I can’t complain. This top is more casual than dressy, mainly because of its Jersey material.  The baby doll shirt is from my January 17 photo session, and it looks a little more dressed up with the pencil skirt. And I suppose this could stand alone and be functional at the office. But of course, we need to embellish for this shoot, so I put on the light teal duster. This look is even more professional, and would be great for meeting day at work. Still looks a little plain to me, so next time I would maybe add a printed scarf.

In Conclusion
