8 Ways to Wear a Plus Size Blue Dress – Photo Shoot 12/27/19

When I was selecting outfits for my photo shoot this week, one of my favorite go-to dresses came up next in my closet. And I got so carried away with making outfits out of my little BLUE dress, that I didn’t get any other pictures shot. So, for this week of December 27, 2019, my photo shoot consists of 8 ways to wear a plus size little blue dress! Enjoy!

First, Let’s Talk About the Little BLACK Dress (LBD)

According to “What Not To Wear” fashion gurus Clint and Stacy, your little BLACK dress doesn’t have to be black. It just has to be a dress you love, that can be dressed up or down for any occasion. It can be red if you want it to be. So don’t let anyone tell you that you need a LBD if you don’t like black. This Little BLUE Dress can be your LBD if you want it to be.

I, on the other hand, love black and subscribe to the philosophy wearing black until they come up with a darker color.  So I have a little black dress, that is really black, but I also have this the blue dress that can be dressed up or down, summer or winter, and I love it!

(Black dress is from Lane Bryant clearance page online, $25, made of crinkle cotton blend, fully lined with caged neckline, front and back.  No closure, pull over, wash separately on delicate setting and hang to dry.)

Blue Tank Dress with Ruffle Hem (Our LBD for this article)

Here is the little blue dress in question. I got this dress on the clearance page online at Lane Bryant for around $25. It is navy blue, but has a sheen, as well as a burn out look to it, giving it a lighter look that isn’t stark dark, like most of my navy blue clothing. The material is a light Jersey that can be worn any season, and is super easy to care for: just wash in cold water and hang up to dry. It has no zipper or button, so it’s one of those “throw and go” dresses. Easy peasy, no fuss, no muss!

As is, this little blue dress can be worn to a work, a picnic, or to church. I wear it by itself like this when it’s extra hot outside, and I want to look nice but be comfortable as well.

LBD with Blue and White Boho Blouse

You can wear just about any blouse or T-shirt over this blue dress, for all but the hottest days of summer. It’s a nice look for the office or church. The print adds a lot of character and makes the outfit more interesting.

I think I have had this blue and white print blouse for a year or two. I got it off the rack at a Walmart. I think we were on a weekend away in Denver, and we needed to pick up a few things, so it was one of those “where’s the closest Walmart” entries in Google. Sorry I can’t remember which one.

I love this blouse. It’s mostly cotton. I wash it in cold water then hang it to dry. When I’m going to wear it, I do a little “handyman ironing”, which means I put it in the dryer for a few minutes to bust out most of the wrinkles.

LBD with Orange Burn-Out Tie Side T-Shirt

The orange burn-out shirt came from Jessica London sometime around 2010. I like the relaxed look of this shirt. The burn-out, cotton-blend nature of the T-shirt plays off the burn-out of the blue dress, and makes for a laid back but put-together outfit for a Sunday brunch or a weekend of shopping. I wear the T-shirt a lot with my army green utility jacket and my khaki shorts, kind of a tree-hugger, Birkenstock-wearer look for super casual outings such as hikes or picnics.

LBD with White and Black Striped Shirt

Here I am with my stripy shirt again, that goes everywhere with everything.  Click here, as this shirt comes up in the demo of my closet order, and you can see other outfits I made with it.  I got this shirt in 2016 at the Silverthorne Target store, off the rack.  I don’t remember the price.  It was about the time Target started to have really cute clothing in their plus size section, but it was still all the way to the back of the store, in mixed in with maternity clothes.

(It’s been a while since I’ve been in a Target store, because I love shopping at Target online.  But I did, however, go into a Target in Fort Collins over Thanksgiving of this year.  And they had the plus size clothing right out in front where they used to have the straight sizes.  I was thrilled!  If you read the body positive and size inclusivity articles I’ve written, you know this is a big leap forward for us big girls!)

LBD with Blue and White Striped Cardigan

You can also wear just about any cardigan, solid colored or print, with this dress. It makes for a great spring or fall look, and I’ve even worn this on early summer mornings, but taken off the cardigan when it gets warmer in the afternoon.

I got this marine inspired, striped number from Amazon back in 2012, for around $12, I think. What’s crazy is, I had it in my closet for a long time and never wore it. I felt conspicuous in it, because fat girls “aren’t supposed to wear horizontal stripes”. But I got over that, luckily, and now I wear it a lot. I love to wear it with jeans and a white tank top, or with any combo of my skirts or dresses. It’s a really light Jersey material, another easy-to-wear, easy-to-care item in my plus size capsule wardrobe, that gives any outfit more character and interest.

LBD with Coral Overpiece

I bought this over piece at the same time I bought the blue dress from the Lane Bryant clearance page online, for around $25 last summer. It’s made of cotton gauzy material and has a lacey inset at the back of the neck, and a pompom trim all around. I love the bright, orangy, coral color. I use this over piece to change up a lot of my outfits, adding fun color and detail to the plainest outfit. It’s flowy nature is comfortable for the hottest summer day and the coolest summer night. It goes great with my little blue dress AND my little black dress! Fun outfit for an outdoor BBQ or party.

LBD with Wine Duster Vest

LBD with Light Teal Open Front Duster

This has got to be my favorite look of the shoot. This sweater was another clearance find online at Lane Bryant. I think I got this one for $35. It’s a micro knit cotton polyester blend. I like its lighter weight, because I just can’t stand the heat of a bulky sweater, even on the coldest winter day. I like, too, that this has half-length sleeves, which makes it a professional look, comfortable enough for the office. I wear the duster with a bunch of other pieces, such as jeans, blouses, T-shirts, and skirts. Great for the cooler seasons.

LBD for Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall

You can wear this dress for any season. Wear by itself when its hot outside. Add a sweater when it gets cooler. And in the cold cold winter, get your bulky sweater, your tights or leggings, and your boots on. Dress it up for an evening out or dress it down for a picnic in the park. Add a blouse, a scarf, a vest, or a sweater. The possibilities for this little dress are endless!

Conclusion
