Plus Size Black Outfits – My Favorite Neutral

Hello all, here it is as promised. I’m a little late on this, but now with a new computer, I should be able to get you my photo shoots a lot quicker and easier! Yay! So, I promised you a shoot with all plus size black outfits. To be honest with you, this was a challenge, because I found that I don’t have as much black in my wardrobe as I thought! I have a lot of black “influence”, that is, pieces with black in the print or the trim, but not as much solid black. But I did find enough for the shoot, so here goes!

One different thing I’m going to do here, is give you options to click on so you can buy the looks I’m talking about. Many of my clothing items are either really old and not offered anymore, or they are from the sale rack, so you would not be able to get my exact look. But because I’m blessed to be working with Amazon, I will show you how to get a similar look, and all you have to do it click on it!

Black Jumper With Black Cardigan

This jumper, from Ross, made its debut in my December 6, 2019 shoot. I am wearing my black cardigan from Walmart with it, which I wore in the December 14 shoot.

My black jumper is a go-to piece that goes anywhere in any weather. I would call this a midi length, but you can do this jumper in any length you choose. It’s a classic that can be dressed up or down, and is appropriate for any occasion. The look I have done here, with the plain black flats, or with boots, is a chic outfit that I would wear to dinner or an evening affair. I would dress it up with a sparkly necklace or some chandelier earrings. My favorite would be silver, because I think silver jewelry pops with the black background.

And of course I love the black cardigan. The open front cardigan has become a classic in its own right. It goes over any blouse or top, is simple, yet elegant and chic, and really completes any outfit of any color. I can’t believe how much I have worn this piece, perhaps once per week since I bought it more than 10 years ago. I love it, and would be lost without it.

Yes, the jumper does look great on its own. Some fancy high-heeled shoes and some chunky jewelry would complete this look for evening. Black slide sandals would make it a nice summer afternoon outfit for shopping or sight seeing. I would even wear this to work, with a throw or a button up blouse over the top to take the chill off the air conditioning.

Graphic T-Shirt and Black Pencil Skirt

This No Coffee No Talkie shirt from Lane Bryant (that’s really a night shirt) is a fun top I first wore in the December 14, 2019 shoot. The pencil skirt is BRAND NEW off the sale page at Woman Within.

Again, I’m going to emphasize the need for longer length graphic T-shirts for us plus size women. It’s pretty sad that I have to wear a pajama shirt to get a look that’s incredibly popular right now. But I do like this one, and unless you saw it in Lane Bryant’s clearance page, you would never know it’s PJs. Another example of how we plus size women can overcome and adapt. I love that its a mini dress length on me, and it’s fun to wear with leggings and boots, as well as any number of skirts, jeggings, or jeans, plus a sweater or jacket.

The pencil skirt is a style that makes anybody look amazing. This one is pull on, without any kind of closure, and it’s completely stretchable in a spandex material that feels like Jersey. So it’s an all-day office piece that I can wear with comfort. Once again, dress it up or dress it down, and you have another go-to staple in your plus size capsule wardrobe.

I also found a couple plus size night shirts, much like mine, that are longer length and might pass as a daytime T-shirt.  I would wear them.

Graphic T-Shirt, Polka Dot Shirt Dress, and Black Pencil Skirt

The shirt dress is brand new from Ellos, which is affiliated with Woman Within, where I found it on the clearance page. I’m disappointed with the dress, because although I’m a solid size 28, I can hardly get this dress buttoned, and it pulls the sausage casing look on me. Once again failed by the clothing industry that has no standard sizing. Why, if we are a solid size 28, can’t we expect a 28 to BE a 28 when we buy it? Aggravating!

But the polka dot dress does look cute as an overpiece with my graphic T-shirt and pencil skirt. It’s a semi-sheer, lightweight material that looks gauzy and flowy for the hottest summer days. And of course it can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

Graphic T-Shirt, Glen Plaid Shirt Dress, and Black Pencil Skirt

Here’s my T-shirt and pencil skirt combo again, but this time, I’m wearing another shirt dress, of black and white plaid from Target. Another disappointing shirt dress that claims it’s a 4x, but doesn’t button up the front. So, wearing it open once again. Glen plaid can be considered a neutral, because, from far away, it looks like a solid color. I would wear this shirt dress with any of my solid color cammies, T-shirts, blouses, or tunic tops. It looks great with a skirt, and would be even cuter with leggings. So, even though I’m slightly mad at this dress, I will keep it.

The black tunic from Amazon showed up for the first time in the Holiday Outfits shoot,  The black maxi, from Amazon, I wore in the December 14th shoot, but I wore it as a tube top dress under a silky blouse, which gave it a high-low hemline. The stretch belt from Lane Bryant made it’s debut here in the January 17, 2020 session.

This could be a Holiday look or an evening look. I also included the outfit without the belt, which can either be dressed up for evening, or worn plain with bare feet, something you could throw over a bathing suit and be super casual in. I love this comfortable flowy look!

Black Lace Cammy, Black Shirt Extender, Black Cardigan, Black Jeggings

Unless you look very closely, you would never know that the lace cammy and the shirt extender are two pieces. with the waistline tucked up under my bust, it looks like one piece. The cammy from Lane Bryant, is in my capsule wardrobe, and has been discussed in the Holiday Outfits write-up, as were the black Jeggings from Walmart. And, from above, the black cardigan makes another appearance.

I would wear this out to a club, if I was the clubbing kind. With boots, it would be a pretty bad-ass look. (As a side note, when I did this shoot, I tried to look bad-ass, with a sexy, pouty, frowny look on my face. The result? I looked more like a sad puppy or a scared little girl. I guess I have to be in a bad-ass mood. Can’t pull off the bad-ass face, so I will have to be my smiley self!)

I also showed this look without the cardigan. I think it looks pretty cute that way as well.

LBD (Little Black Dress)

I covered my little black dress in the Little Blue Dress session. I got it off the sale page at Lane Bryant. This is one of my favorite pieces, because of its versatility. I would wear this with my sequined high heels and some silvery chandelier earrings, for a night out, or I would wear it with black flats and a throw or a cardigan to work. It looks pretty cute all by itself to wear to brunch and shopping, or for walking on the beach (if I had a beach nearby!). It’s a fun variation of a LBD that you don’t normally see, and that’s what I like most about it; it’s uniqueness.

Last but not least, here is my New Year’s Eve look from the Holiday Outfit session. I am wearing the black T-shirt tunic from the maxi skirt outfit above.  Also, I have my palazzo pants from Woman Within.

I love palazzo pants!  They are stretchy and comfortable, and they look like you really meant to dress up.  I wear mine mostly with a tunic top, but I could wear them with the graphic T-shirt and shirt dress combos from above.  I have not tried to wear them with a shirt tucked in yet, but I will try that on another shoot.

So There You Have It

I thought I had more black pieces than I do. I have around 15 wardrobe items that are black. Some didn’t make it into this shoot, but I’ve worn them for other sessions, so you can see what I have overall. The point I wanted to make here is, that if you love black, don’t be afraid to wear all black when you feel like it. But also, don’t be afraid to change it up and wear other colors, or at least try something other than black. Although it is my favorite neutral, it is not the end-all-be-all, and I do have other colors to wear.  I just really love black, and I think I look amazing in it!
