Women’s Plus Size Outfit Ideas – Photo Shoot January 17, 2020

Hello again all, and welcome to my next installment of my weekly Plus Size Capsule Wardrobe Photo Shoot! I will be showing off more women’s plus size outfit ideas, so get ready to get creative with me, and let’s see what you can put together from your own closets!

On past shoots, I noticed my penchant for black on black on black. I really do love black, and have a lot of it in my wardrobe. But I have been using it a lot in my photo shoots (and in real life, hahaha) and I thought I should try other alternatives.

So in this shoot, as well as trying to avoid black, I challenged myself to create three outfits from each piece I pulled from my closet. And each outfit is a combination I have never worn before. So here goes. Remember, at the end, I want your honest options about all of it.

Lane Bryant Asymetrical Hem Floral-Butterfly T-Shirt

I got this 3/4 sleeve T-shirt off the sales rack several years ago. Even though I only wash it in cold water, and never put it in the dryer, it has shrunken in length, a continual nuisance for us big girls. But I still love the shirt. I normally wear it with a black shirt extender and black jeans or jeggings for winter, or with black capris for summer.

For my first outfit here, I wore the T-shirt with my ivory shirt extender from Amazon (as the base color for the abstract flowers and butterflies is an ivory-beige), and tried my berry colored jeggings from Walmart with it. I think it looks OK, and I might try this look at the office.

My next outfit with the T-shirt is with my black faux button skirt from Target. I know I promised less black, but I honestly have never worn this T-shirt with a skirt before. I really like this look.

And the last look for this shirt, is tucked in with my black maxi skirt from Amazon. This is a wintry kind of look, and I would also pair it with my purple babydoll cardigan from Walmart (to bring out the purple butterflies), or my beige cut-away sweater from Target.

Lane Bryant Royal Blue Swim Cover-Up

I have mentioned in several other posts that I love adding swim cover-ups to my wardrobe. I like the length and versatility. I got this one on the clearance page online. I normally wear it with a black lace cammy and black leggings, with my black belt or with no belt at all.

Here, I have tried the garment with my blue faux button skirt from Target, and a white and blue striped scarf from Lane Bryant. This is a low cut cover-up, so it generally needs a cammy or tank top underneath, but the scarf negates the need for that extra layer, and might be cooler as a result. I really like this outfit as well. The shades of blue are a little off from each other, if you look closely, but in the picture, they look pretty good together. I will be wearing this outfit this summer.

Next, I wore the cover-up with the black lace cammy from Lane Bryant, my big buckle gold stretch belt, also from Lane Bryant, and my black palazzo pants from Woman Within. I know, more black, but I honestly have not worn this combination before. This could be a great evening look with fancier shoes.

And lastly, I am wearing this garment with my gray maxi skirt from Amazon, worn as a tube top dress under the cover-up, and tied at the waist with a metallic tassel braided leather belt from Lane Bryant. (and I did a picture of the back of the cover-up, so you can see the tie and tassel detail.) I would not in a million years thought to wear this combo, when on the fly, getting ready for work in the morning, but I really like it! Another variation to add to my repertoire.

Roamans Orange and Black Monarch Butterfly Print Button Up Blouse

I did a product review of this blouse, which you can read by clicking here. I bought this from Amazon, about a year ago when I first started this blog. Since then, I have worn this blouse mostly with a black skirt or pant. I was pretty proud of myself when I paired it with my little black dress as well, from Lane Bryant, which I wore on the plain to visit my kids last June.

In my first experiment with this blouse, I am wearing it tied in a knot over my gray maxi skirt from Amazon, once again worn as a tube top dress. I am a little skeptical about this look. I have never really liked the knotted shirt look. However, I think I look taller and thinner in this outfit. So I’m still kind of on the fence. One of my most honest critics, (my older daughter) wasn’t too keen on the knotted shirt either. So…maybe this is one for the reject pile.  However, I might try this combination with the blouse untied, buttoned or unbuttoned.

Next I wore the blouse with the lace cammy from Lane Bryat AND the black shirt extender from Ross under it. (When a blouse is low cut AND too short, I have to adapt.) This blouse, like others before it, has shrunken in length despite my careful washing, and it has a tiny gap at the bust because I haven’t gotten around to moving the button on it yet. Hence, all the underpinning. Also, I tried this with my berry colored jeggings from Walmart. Not a bad combination. There is no berry color in the blouse, but, as I have quoted “What Not To Wear” before, it doesn’t have to MATCH, it has to GO, and I think this GOES.

And lastly for this blouse, I tucked it in the black faux button skirt from Target and put my wine colored vest from Amazon over it, Eh. Not really impressed. I have worn the combo without the vest, and I like it, although I generally am not a “shirt tucker” (I don’t have a full length mirror at work, so I worry I won’t get the thing tucked back in suitably after each trip to the…necessary). I would rather wear the blouse untucked with the vest. So now I know.

Lane Bryant Tribal Print Black, White, and Gray Skirt

Well, there’s really no other way to wear a skirt, but AS a skirt. So I paired it with a couple of tops. I got this skirt off the clearance page on Lane Bryant’s website, sometime around 2013 maybe? It was too big, so I just ran a seam up each side of the waist band, which took it in enough but left the skirt just as full. I mostly wear this with a black or a white top, and my black cardigan. But I also mixed it up by wearing it with my lilac tank top, once I decided that any color would go well with this skirt.

First, for this shoot, I put on my pearl gray sweater from Target with this skirt. And tucked it in. I like it, though it goes against my color scheme. I feel like I look washed out in pastels, and I would say the same for all gray. It needs color or some interesting detail of some sort. But not a bad outfit overall.

So I added color. I paired the skirt with my side tie orange T-shirt from Jessica London. I like this one as well, and will wear it this summer.

Next, keeping the need for color in mind, I tried the skirt with my teal, babydoll T-shirt from Woman Within. I also like this combination.

Amazon Forest Green T-Shirt Dress

I got this dress early last Fall from Amazon,mainly as a tunic length shirt and I have worn it as such, with jeggings and boots.

I have never worn this as a stand-alone dress before, so here you see me doing just that. I think it will look cute this summer with some interesting shoes or sandals.

Next I paired the dress with my “frosted strawberry” (read, ORANGE) button down boyfriend cardigan from Woman Within. I like this outfit and will likely wear it in the fall.

And lastly, I put on my orange tie T-shirt from Jessica London on over the green dress. It’s a cute look, but I would not attempt this without leggings and boots, as it was really too warm for summer or spring, and must be worn in the winter.

A General Note

Although I am really enjoying my weekly photo shoots, I want you to know how difficult they are. I don’t know how the professional models do it, with all the clothing changes, reviewing pictures, reshooting and trying again, etc. It’s really tough! It’s not as easy as it looks. So my hat is off to the professionals. This is hard work.

In Conclusion

Thus ends another photo shoot. This one has been particularly educational. I have found some combinations that will really work, and will therefore expand the length and depth of my wardrobe. And now you can see what it’s like to experiment with the clothing you have. Try it yourself and see what works. You might surprise yourself and find your new favorite outfit among your experiments. And if a combination doesn’t work, chalk it up to a learning situation, and move on to other outfits. It’s pretty fun, and I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am.
