No Black Outfits! – Photo Shoot January 31, 2020

Hi again, all you Plus Size Capsule Wardrobe fans! As promised last week, this week’s photo shoot is my next batch of outfits from my closet, but the challenge was to do it without wearing any black. Lack of Black! I think I accomplished that! There are little specks of black here and there, but I avoided anything black in my wardrobe. And I think it turned out great! So here are my next TEN outfits from my closet. And there are no black outfits!

Disclaimer: I did have to skip a couple of garments in my closet order, but that’s OK. Switching up the closet order is not only encouraged but kind of mandatory at least once per season. It helps you make new combinations!

Closet Note: Looks like my photo shoot pieces from the December 14th shoot have come up again in my closet. So Let’s see, that was roughly 49 days ago. So my capsule wardrobe has provided plenty of outfit ideas for 49 days. And Let’s not forget there were Holiday Outfits in there too, So you see, you can do SO MUCH with a small wardrobe.

A Little Spring Fever: I don’t know if it’s the lack of black, or that, because it’s the beginning of February, that I have a little Spring Fever. I think you will see that reflected in the outfits. I will of course explain how to make each outfit multi-seasonal.

I have no problem wearing spring or summer colors in winter. Winter sucks bad enough already, so we should not subject ourselves to mopey dark colors if we don’t have to.

The Chartreuse Green T-Shirt With Colorful Tribal Patterned Maxi Skirt

The green shirt is from Woman Within, and the skirt is from Amazon, both written up in my December 14, 2019, photo shoot. There is just a tiny amount of black in the skirt, not enough to notice with the chartreuse. Once again, I can wear a bunch of my shirts and completer pieces with this skirt. I am thinking the utility jacket you will see later in the shoot, or my ivory cut-away sweater as also seen in the December 14 shoot. For a colder day, of course, tights or leggings underneath, with the skirt worn as a tube top under the green shirt, and of course some snow booties. I would also top with a heavier sweater, or my lined teal anorak jacket. All of which I’m avoiding black.

The Silky Leaf Pattern Blouse With Tan Faux Button Down Skirt

The silky blouse from Walmart also appears in the December 14 shoot, and in my Holiday Outfits shoot. It’s not Black! The background color is dark navy. I love how this blouse can be dressed up or down, belted or unbelted, for dozens of looks. I have paired the blouse with my purple lace cammy from Lane Bryant, written up in the Holiday Outfits shoot, where I was wearing it’s teal twin. And then the tan (light brown or taupe or whatever color it is – reminds me a milk chocolate!) faux button down Jersey skirt from Target! I have worn its sister in black for just about every shoot since its debut in the December 14 shoot.

To make this a winter outfit, I would switch out the skirt for jeans, denim jeggings, or brown trousers. Or, I have a new thing to try for fall, wear a pair of thigh high cable knit socks with my brown swede oxford shoes. For summer, take of the leaf printed blouse and wear just the cammy. Or leave off the cammy and button up the blouse and tuck it in.

Ivory Flower Printed Shirt, Wine Vest, Tan Faux Button Down Skirt

This outfit is ALMOST identical to the one in the December 14 shoot. In that session, I wore the shirt from Walmart and the vest from Amazon, but I had the black shirt extender and black jeggings. There’s a tiny amount of black in the print, but not much. This time I paired the shirt and the vest with my brown skirt. On really hot days, skip the vest. On colder days, skip the vest and wear a heavier completer piece such as a sweater, and put some snow boots on. Also, wear the shirt and vest with jeans, jeggings, or keep the skirt on and wear tights or those thigh high socks I mentioned.

The Orange Tank Top, Gray Maxi Skirt, and Beachy Scarf

The tank top is from Jessica London, and is once again from the December 14 shoot. This time I matched it up with my gray maxi skirt from Amazon, which came in a packaged set with the black maxi skirt, also modeled and written up in the shoot of December 14.

The beachy scarf also came from Jessica London. I like that it’s multi-colored, and goes with a lot of my solid color shirts.

This is truly a summer look if I ever saw one. To warm it up for spring or fall, I would wear the green utility jacket. I would also wear that white gauzy bathing suit cover-up described in the Holiday Outfit shoot. To warm it way up for winter, any number of jackets or sweaters can go over the top, and again, put on some tights or leggings and those snow booties.

The Striped Shirt, Gray Maxi Skirt, and Beachy Scarf

Of course, Stripey came up in the closet here. The stripes look black from a distance, and in the photos, but if you look closely, the stripes are a burnt-out brown. I thought about swapping out the orange tank top, and just going with that same summery look of gray skirt and beachy scarf. The Stripey was written up in the Closet Order post, and is from Target.

I have never tried this combination before, and I think it really works! I will be wearing this when summer comes. Again, you can make the same modifications for warmer or cooler weather as I detailed above.

Pearl Gray Sweater, Multi-Material Infinity Scarf, Blue Faux Button Down Skirt

Pearly, from Target, shows up next in the closet order. I want to laugh here because you can see how long my closet order stands. Back when I wrote the article in March 2019, Stripey and Pearly were next to each other in the closet. They still were when I did this shoot, only in reverse order. Gosh I can’t even recall how many times I’ve worn those two pieces through the seasons. Probably about every 49 days!

Anyway, the blue skirt from Target, is the triplet sister of the black and the tan faux button down that I have worn for this shoot and several other shoots. So you know all about that piece!

Anyway, the scarf is really different, and I want to tell you about it. I got it several years ago for Christmas from my younger daughter (the designer!). One side of the scarf is crocheted dark navy blue. The other side is a soft material, rayon, I’m guessing, that is navy blue, teal, and a bunch of other shades of blueish green in a rose pattern. It’s an infinity scarf: just looped around my neck, it seems too long, but looped twice makes me feel fat-faced-no-neck. So I put a knot in it, and that did the trick, and I wear it most of the time like that. Take it off without untying it, turn it around, and you have the plain navy blue side. This is a great, versatile piece that I LOVE! Thank you, Baby Girl!

Roamans Royal Blue T-Shirt, Navy Printed Vest, Blue Faux Button Down Skirt

I got the Roamans Royal Blue V-neck Tunic T-Shirt last year from Amazon, for $14. I had worn this for an earlier shoot (with the infinity scarf from the last outfit) but didn’t get it into the write- up. I would put that picture in here, but I was wearing black jeggings with it, so, not acceptable in our No Black Outfits post! Anyway, I love the shirt, and you know it goes with everything in my closet.

I skipped the vest last time it came around in my closet rotation. I don’t know why, but the vest intimidates me a little. The colors are so specific on it; a really dark navy background, and a shade of tannish brown in the pattern. Plus the back is an odd shade of brown suede. So when I try to match it with similar colored garments, it just clashes too loudly for me.

It’s just weird, but it looked perfectly nice in the Woman Within catalog I got it out of YEARS ago. Since then it has made an appearance here and there. If and when I wear it, it’s usually with a black or white blouse, and always jeans. You can see the vest with a black dress in this post of random photo shoots. And I think I wore it last summer with fuchsia T-shirt and jeans, just because I know now I can wear any monochrome patterned piece with colors other than what’s in them. And for this shoot, I said “What the heck” and paired it with other shades of blue. Anyway, I sometimes like it, and sometimes don’t.

Teal Lace Cammy, Light Teal Open Front Duster, Blue Faux Button Down Skirt

I wore the cammy from Lane Bryant in the Holiday Outfit shoot. The Duster, from Lane Bryant, is highlighted in the Little Blue Dress photo session, and of course the blue skirt is from above.

Blue and White Tribal Print Blouse, Navy Striped Cardigan, Blue Faux Button Down Skirt

I saw this combo come up together as “next” in my closet order, and I thought, well, why don’t I experiment with the different patterns? A good way to start mixing patterns is to make sure they are monochrome, that is, all one color. Since both pieces are blue and white, it makes sense here. I think it works!

Both the blouse from Walmart and the cardigan from Amazon were featured in the Little Blue Dress shoot. They look pretty smashing with the skirt here as well.

Purple Tank Top, Green Utility Jacket, Violet Scarf, Blue Faux Button Down Skirt

The purple tank is the twin of the orange one above, from Jessica London, bought from the same place at the same time.

The jacket from Target is in my capsule wardrobe post, and I have spoken about it throughout the website. I wore it in last week’s shoot as well with my new teal paisley T-shirt. Love it lots, wear it often!

The violet scarf, from Jessica London, is one of my favorites. I love the old-fashioned ivory background, and it has violets and pink flowers, with bright green and olive green leaves all around. I wear it when I want to be super casual. And this is my favorite combination to wear it with, the olive green of the jacket and the violet of the blouse. A go-to for sure!

Purple Ruched Neckline T-Shirt, White Pixel Skirt

I wore the purple shirt from Woman Within with the striped cover-up in the January 3rd photo session. Another versatile favorite that is easy to make outfits with.

The white pixel skirt, from Lane Bryant was in a shoot a couple weeks ago and got bumped. But it shows up in the posting about my capsule wardrobe. I call it pixel because it is covered with colorful squares, spaced graphically, like looking at a picture up close and seeing the individual pixels. If  you look closely at the squares, it is as if someone cut up a picture of green palm trees, blue ocean, and pink flowers.  It’s really different than anything I’ve seen.  I love this skirt because it goes with all my shirts, but is something different from what I already had.

For winter, I’ve worn this skirt with leggings, and of course, just about any completer jacket or sweater. I tend to pass it up in winter because this skirt is just too summery, but then again, that’s my former clothing attitudes coming out, which they do occasionally.

Fuchsia Smocked Tie T-Shirt, White Lace Shirt Extender, Berry Jeggings

Ah, my last outfit of the shoot, and no black in sight, unless you count the shoes. This T-shirt from Walmart was featured in the January 3rd photo session. The white lace shirt extender (half slip worn as a tube top) is from Amazon. The berry jeggings are from Walmart, and I wore them for the closet order post with the striped shirt above.

I’m not crazy about this outfit. I think it needs a completer piece, but I could not decide which. Maybe the wine vest? The fuchsia and berry colors would be in the same family as the wine. And I suppose any solid color would go with the outfit, because, nine times out of ten, you will get a nice “color block” look. So I’m thinking whatever I put on would have worked well.

I think the fuchsia and the white extender would look cute with the pixel skirt above, or any of the other skirts I modeled today. Fuchsia is one of my most favorite colors. So maybe I could rock this look after all.

As Promised, No (or very little) Black

I did it! No black. Ladies (and Gents), it can be done. I felt comfortable in everything I wore this week, even though I didn’t wear black, but I will have to get back to black next week. I will be doing an all black photo shoot next week to make up for the lack of it this week.  So stay tuned.  If you like black, like I do, you will enjoy it.  Anyway, thank you so much for reading, and please place your comments and questions below.
